John Thennes
When John Thennes talks about his family (Wife of 37 Years Ann, 2 daughters – Kristen and Amanda and his two granddaughters) you can see the love in his eyes. When he talks about his “second family” the YMCA you can feel the appreciation.
John and the YMCA became acquainted out of necessity. Ten years ago John was diagnosed with diabetes and like so many he turned to exercise to help him manage his condition. But now 10 years later and 28 pounds lighter he enjoys his daily visits for other reasons. He has come to make many new friends and tremendously enjoys the camaraderie he finds at the Y. The 90 minute daily workouts of cardio and resistance training are made easier because of coming into a positive atmosphere. John attributes this to the staff saying, “Everyone is very helpful and knowledgeable. If you don’t know where to start just ask…I did. The trainers are there to help.”
But it isn’t just the staff, John likes the Y because of its culture. He loves how the Y is for everyone…young and old and he sees what the Y does for area Youth through the programs.
John Thennes is enjoying his life thoroughly and he’ll give you a little advice to help you enjoy yours: “The more fit you are, the more pleasurable it will be to live to an old age.” We agree with John!
