NLYMCA Dickinson Center sends seven to state swim meet



IRON MOUNTAIN – Northern Lights YMCA Dickinson Center had seven swimmers qualify and compete at the Wisconsin/U.P. state championship meet at the Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center in Brown Deer, Wis. on March 18-20.
Led by Sierra Tantangelo, who qualified for five events and Ella Murphy, who qualified for four swims, the other NLYMCA Dickinson Center state swimmers included Ella McLean, Allison Deuter, Elena Nelson, Aubree Peterson and Bryce Johnson.
“All seven of our Dickinson swimmers did phenomenal at the Wisconsin-Upper Michigan state meet,” NLYMCA Dickinson Center head coach Aimee Tatangelo said. “They showed they belonged there.”
Murphy medaled in the 25 and 50 freestyle and took home a third in the 50 backstroke. Tatangelo earned medals in the 25 and 50 free, while Johnson was a medalist in the 100 free.
The state meet concluded the season for the NLYMCA swimmers. More than 40 kids were registered for the team. The team gathered Monday for a season-ending banquet, where team awards were distributed.
Swimmer of the Year honors went to Johnson and Murphy. Marley Dixon and Dominic Tatangelo shared Most Valuable Swimmer accolades. Extra Mile award winners were Tucker Williams and Deuter. Conor Smith and Kyara Noasconi were named Shooting Star winners, and the award for most improved went to Triston Trevillian and Gianna Novara.
High points for the season went to Sawyer Williams and Sierra Tatangelo (8 and under); Dominic Tatangelo and Cira Windell (10 and under); Johnson and Kailey Matuszewski (12 and under); and
Kaden Matuszewski and Nelson (13 and over).
“It was a really great and fun season,” said Tatangelo, who was in her first year as head coach. “Our kids were dedicated and showed consistent improvement as the year progressed. I’m looking forward to next season.”
