IRON MOUNTAIN – Several Northern Lights YMCA swimmers posted personal bests at the Polar Plunge meet held at the Northern Lights YMCA Dickinson Center pool Feb. 5. The meet also included swimmers from the Delta Center and YMCAs in Marquette and Menominee.
“We have had a lot of meet cancellations this season, so it was great to finally see all of the hard work our swimmers have put in at practice showcased in a competition,” NLYMCA coach Aimee Tatangelo said.
Personal best swims were posted by Bryce Johnson (age 11), Ben Lundholm (10), Ella Murphy (8), and Dominic Tatangelo (9), who each collected individual first place swims. Personal bests and team records were set, with Tucker Williams (11) and Elana Nelson (13) each setting marks for their age group in the 1,000 yard freestyle.
Murphy and Sierra Tantangelo (7) each posted personal bests and state qualifying times in three events, the 25 and 50 yard freestyle, as well as the 25 yard backstroke.
“It was so great to see two of our younger swimmers qualify for the Wisconsin- Upper Michigan State Finals in Milwaukee,” Tantangelo noted. “At this level of swimming, our main focus is improving stroke technique, speed, and learning about personal best times.”
Additional NLYMCA swimmers to notch personal bests included: Adeline Alwine, Lydia Baumgartner, Isabella Corsi, Logan Corsi, Allison Deuter, Aubrey Dixon, Marley Dixon, Bryce Johnson, Clare Lundholm, Kailey Matuszewski, Isaac Nelson, Kyara Noasconi, Gianna Novara, Aubree Peterson, Macey Pietrantonio, Claire Rutter, Olivia Scott, Brynnly Solka, Kennedie Trevillian, Triston Trevillian, Ellie Williams, Greyson Williams, Sawyer Williams and Cira Windell.
The NLYMCA swim team will be hitting the road with upcoming meets in Door County, Marquette, and Ashwaubenon over the next several weeks.
The NLYMCA swim team will once again be offering a summer swim program, which leads into next fall’s season. Please contact the YMCA at (906) 774-4076 for more information.
