NLYMCA sends large group to first swim meet
MARQUETTE – Northern Lights YMCA Dickinson Center’s youth swim team participated in its first meet of the season Oct. 27-28 at Marquette Senior High School.
Between the Delta and Dickinson Centers combined, Northern Lights YMCA sent 44 swimmers to the meet, 26 of those belonging to the Dickinson Center. The Dickinson Center has more than 50 children registered on the team this season.
“We have a large group of swimmers this season,” NLYMCA head coach Aimee Tantangelo said. “It’s so encouraging to see these kinds of numbers. The enthusiasm is through the roof, and these kids are gearing up for a fun and successful swim season.”
At the Marquette meet, Dickinson swimmers Catherine Majors, James Carlson, Annika Gustafson, Miriam Gustafson, Ella Mclaughlin, and Weston Trevillian all competed in a meet for the first time. Significant time improvements were posted by Allison Deuter, Kailey Matuszewski, Ella Murphy, Kyara Noasconi, Dominic Tatangelo, Triston Trevillian, Ellie Williams, Greyson Williams, Sawyer Williams and Tucker Williams.
Dickinson swimmers posted 20 first place finishes at the meet, which also featured competitors from the Marquette YMCA and the Marinette/Menominee YMCA.
Nahia Zamorano a 15-year old exchange student from Spain, claimed firsts in the girls 13 and over 500 yard freestyle, 100 butterfly, 50 free, 100 breaststroke, 100 free and 200 breaststroke Tucker Williams won boys 11-12 year old 500 free, 50 free and 50 backstroke.
In girls 8 and under, Sierra Tantangelo was first in the 25 free, 25 backstroke, 100 individual medley, 25 breaststroke, 50 butterfly and 50 free. Her brother Dominic swam to first in the 25 backstroke and 50 free in the boys 9/10 division.
Bryce Johnson posted wins in the boys 11-12 year old 100 and 200 freestyle. And in girls 9-10, Alexandra Lampi was fastest in the 100 breaststroke.
“Our kids have been working hard, gaining speed and technique,” Tantangelo said. “I’m excited to see the continued progress of this group as the season continues.”
